PFLAG’s Impact

When our daughter first came out, I felt lost. How do I find the resources she will need? How do I keep her safe in our conservative, rural town? How do I help her find peers who understand her joys and stressors related to her transition? Frankly, I was terrified. PFLAG was the first thing that popped into my head that night and I found a contact for our nearest chapter and emailed them. Within 12 hours I had 7 parents who had been where I was that were offering their numbers, a dinner, a support system. Within a few days we had support groups for our child, groups for us, met up with two other families, found an affirming therapist, and an appointment with a specialist to discuss our daughter's care. To me PFLAG is not just a monthly meeting to talk about our struggles. To me PFLAG is an entire support system for our family and community. It is a place to find and give support, a help desk, a shoulder to cry on, a crew to celebrate with, and a connection to new friends and our community.

Let’s Show Our Pride!

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds, 7:15pm

We hope everyone will join us to celebrate Pride at the baseball game! With every Pride Night ticket purchase, PFLAG Greater St. Louis will receive a donation from the Cardinals. PFLAG has purchased a limited number of tickets in a block for those who want to sit together with other PFLAGers. They are located in the First Base Terrace and are available first-come, first-serve at our cost. See below to order tickets. Last but not least, everyone is invited to join us for a pre-game gathering near the stadium. More details to come so watch for future announcements.

What Can I Do?!

Are you frustrated, angry, and overwhelmed by the ever-growing number of anti-trans bills making their way through the Missouri legislature (not to mention so many other states)? Do you worry about how dangerous these bills are for our children whether they pass into law or not?? Do you want to DO SOMETHING about it, but not know where to start??

Organizations like PROMO are doing a lot of work to make it easier for the rest of us to know what’s happening and it doesn’t take much time at all to contact your representatives with the tools they’ve created. If that’s not enough, there are opportunities to share your personal story and testify before the legislature. Here are some tools to keep track of what’s going on and make your voice heard:

Find your legislators
Track current legislation that affects the LGBTQ+ community in Missouri – regular updates from PROMO highlight what’s happening in Jeff City and include simple messages you can deliver to your representatives
Bill tracker provides detailed information about upcoming hearings and legislative news about specific bills making their way through the legislative process – you choose daily or weekly updates
Share your story or testify before MO lawmakers – you can sign up with PROMO to let our lawmakers know how both pro-equality and anti-LGBTQ bills will affect our children and our families. Scroll halfway down the page to the sign up form.
Finally, TransParent has created an Advocacy 101 Guide that is very helpful if you’re just starting down the path of political advocacy. Check it out!

In the face of all the anti-LGBTQ legislation coming at us these days, we hope these resources inspire you to get more politically active and make it easier for you to know what to do.

Drag Queen Story Hour!

PFLAG Greater St. Louis, The Novel Neighbor, and the Opera Theater of St. Louis hosted Drag Queen Story Hour on Sunday 4/10 for a fabulous and family-friendly event celebrating the legacy of Harvey Milk!

Kara Lagerfeld (Miss Gay Gateway Missouri) read “Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag” by Rob Sanders and acclaimed artist Tiélere Cheatem led an interactive session with the children to create their own Pride Flag to celebrate what makes them unique. GLSEN Day of Silence
My Silence, My Action

Every year in April, LGBTQ students and allies around the world take vows of silence to protest harassment and discrimination of LGBTQ people in schools. Started in the mid 90’s by two college students, the Day of Silence, through silent protest and a concluding rally brings attention to how schools and communities can be more inclusive.

On April 22, post/talk about/make known how you envision your schools/your community could be more inclusive of LGBTQ folks. Use the hashtags #DayofSilence and #BreakingTheSilence if you’re posting on Social Media. Join the Virtual Break the Silence Rally here at 6pm CST.
