PFLAG’s Impact

Quite often parents say that they have “high hopes for their child”. When a child comes out to these same parents, there is worry that these high hopes are gone forever because of stigma. There’s worry and concern that the hopes and dreams of their kids can’t be the same because they are LGBT+.

As a gay man who is married, has kids and grandkids, had a gorgeous wedding, and is a happy home owner, I attend PFLAG to be a living example of the fact that LGBTQ+ individuals can achieve their hopes and dreams. I dreamed of these things since I was a kid, and they have come true. Coming out didn’t change them and doesn’t have to change them for anyone in the community.

PFLAG is so important to me because it helps parents remember and realize that their child is still their child and can have similar hopes and dreams even after they come out. PFLAG gives parents that space to ask the tough questions, but more importantly, remember that their child can achieve amazing things!

Proud PFLAG Volunteers Needed!

We are going to show up to the PRIDE St. Louis Grand Parade in a big way. Will you join us?! We want the STL world to know that PFLAG is strong and working, and we need you in order to do that.

Mark your calendars for June 18th from noon-8pm and join us at Pride St. Charles! Reach out to us if you can volunteer at our table.

Mark you calendars also for June 26 at 10:30 am and come march/dance/celebrate with us at the Grand Parade. We gather at 10th and Market in downtown St. Louis. Check out the fun we had in 2018 in this amazing video from our own Sarah Jay!

Pride and Stonewall

Pride month is a time of celebration, recognition of the beauty of the LGBTQ+ community, and of coming together as a community. Pride is also a time to continue the fight for equity and inclusion. We recognize the strides we’ve made, but also the distance we still have to go to make this world full inclusive. Pride’s start is after all grounded in advocacy and uprisings.

The next year Christopher Street Liberation Day was celebrated the last Saturday in June with the first Pride march to honor the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riot.

When we march, celebrate, and do all things Pride, we do it in part because of the work of activists like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and those many others who stood against oppression. May we remember and honor that legacy this June.
